Quick Update: made it to Fort Nelson

By on Wednesday August 30th, 2017

It was about 5pm when I reached Fort Nelson yesterday. After I lost my bear spray four days earlier somewhere on the Alaska Highway I was glad and relieved to reach a town with “full service”. In almost all lodges along the way I repeatedly asked for bear spray – without success. I’s an unpleasant feeling if you’ve lost the only potential weapon against a possible bear attack. My swiss army knife would be no help and also pedaling away from a bear is not a good option as these animals can reach a speed of up to 60km/h. Even down hill this is very difficult for me. So, the first thing in the morning after I left the campground was to visit the local sport shop and buy a new spray and a carabiner to not loose it again. As of now, pedaling should be a lot more relaxing again.

Since my last update I’ve increased my average daily distance to ca. 100km. The souring pain in my muscles I experiences on the first stages is now almost completely gone. Only my neck hurts a little bit since I tried to fight the wind by going into the aero position (leaning over my steering bag). Sleeping on the thin mattress though pretty comfortable was not really helping much to relax this part of my body. But I can already feel that it got better through the past days – seems my body is acclimatizing.

That was another quick update only – I’m still falling short on “long stories” which I want to tell you. So, again you will mainly have to live with the fotos. 😉

    Bärenspray … hmm … not for the faint-hearted … 😉
